Spiritual Discipline: For The Purpose Of Godliness

Timothy 4:7 states a point that seems to be neglected by many who claim to be Christ followers. “We are to train for godliness”. The implication of training is it that we must work at being godly. Not to be saved, but after you are saved. I have been using an illustration of a mirror and asking; who do you see in the mirror? Should you see yourself or Christ? The answer is Christ, but our image, which is the image of God, has been broken. It is not gone just distorted from the cracks of sin. The purposes of these disciplines are to restore some of these cracks so that when someone looks at you they see Christ. So what are these disciplines? The first, and rightly so, has to do with our Bible intake. If we are going to be transformed than it will be by and through the Word of God. Sitting here I cannot think of a single reason why someone who has been saved by the grace of God would not want to be godly. Let’s begin with our daily bread, The Word of God. A few simple check points: Do you have a daily time of just reading the scripture. Are you taking advantage of those times Bible study is offered at church or in someone’s home? Are you teaching your family to be godly by being a good example of Bible intake? Do understand that just reading your Bible will not make you godly. This is just a vehicle to lead your spirit to touch The Spirit of God! That’s what we long for isn’t it? These disciplines do not make you holy or godly they just help you come to the one who is, Jesus. Just as an athlete trains, shouldn't the Christian? Not to be a star, but for the purpose of godliness. Bible intake is just the first. Some of the others are prayer, worship, evangelism, just to name a few. Train for the purpose of godliness so that we may reflect Christ to others.
